Gap Will Continue to Expand Unless a Change of Focus in Systems for Myoelectric Control Occurs

چکیده
R ecently, there have been several media reports on advanced multifunction upper limb prostheses, often hyped as “the mind-controlled artificial hands” [1]. Advanced signal processing of the electromyogram (EMG) signal and innovative surgical procedures, such as the targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) and targeted sensory reinnervation (TSR), are the driving forces behind these achievements. Nonetheless, despite the enthusiasm of some public presentations of artificial devices, there still exist considerable challenges before these developments can be beneficial to the general amputee population. In this article, the basic concept of myoelectric control and the state of the art in both industry and academia will be presented. It will emerge that there is a gap between industrial and academic achievements and that this gap will continue to expand unless a change of focus in systems for myoelectric control occurs.

The development and evolution of any system–person, organization–nation depends on how the system succeeds to bridge the gap between what the system knows and what the system does (with the knowledge). We call this the gap between knowing and doing or the knowing-doing gap. If the system does not do what it knows, it will lose out in competition with other systems, its relative performance in...
متن کاملMeeting the Challenge of the “Know-Do” Gap; Comment on “CIHR Health System Impact Fellows: Reflections on ‘Driving Change’ Within the Health System”
Bridging the ‘know-do’ gap is not new but considerably greater attention is being focused on the issue as governments and research funders seek to demonstrate value for money and impact on policy and practice. Initiatives like the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Health System Impact (HSI) Fellowship are therefore both timely and welcome. However, they conf...
متن کاملDevelopment of the Bento Arm: an Improved Robotic Arm for Myoelectric Training and Research
Myoelectric training is a key step in transitioning upper limb amputee patients to a successful myoelectric prosthesis fitting. Although training was found to be important in fittings with children [1], a gap in the literature exists for linking training systems to improved outcomes in adults. In order to close this gap additional studies must be performed to more closely evaluate the effect of...
متن کاملA method of identifying suitable manufacturing system (Cellular) for automotive sector using Analytical Hierarchy Process
Manufacturing produces real wealth for any country and constitutes the back bone for the service sector. The objective of any organization is to earn profit. Usually the market fixes the selling price of the manufactured components. Unless there is focus on the manufacturing strategy of reducing manufacturing cost, it is very difficult to sustain in this ever competitive world. A suitable manuf...
متن کاملPolicy Capacity in the Learning Healthcare System; Comment on “Health Reform Requires Policy Capacity”
Pierre-Gerlier Forest and his colleagues make a strong argument for the need to expand policy capacity among healthcare actors. In this commentary, I develop an additional argument in support of Forest et al view. Forest et al rightly point to the need to have embedded policy experts to successfully translate healthcare reform policy into healthcare change. Translation of externally generated i...
